2010 Sharks International Conference

It is our pleasure to announce that we will be hosting Sharks International, an international conference designed to provide a forum for chondrichthyan researchers to come together to share ideas, report on progress on the most recent scientific studies in the field and network with colleagues from around the globe. We have recently been awarded funding from the Australian Academy of Science and Australian Academy of Technical Sciences and Engineering. This support means this conference will form part of the Sir Mark Oliphant International Frontiers in Science and Technology Conference Series and that we can host the meeting for a relatively low cost to delegates.

We are in the process of establishing a website for the conference and are finalising the meeting venue. As soon as the website is up and we have more details we will post them to this list of recipients. Please feel free to distribute this information to any interested colleagues or suggest names to be added to the list by contacting sharksinternational@gmail.com.

The conference will be held in Cairns, Queensland, Australia 6-11 June 2010. Welcome drinks will be held on the evening of Sunday 6 June with sessions starting Monday morning. Wednesday will be a talk-free day for delegates to take a break from the meeting, meet with colleagues and experience some of the area. This conference is designed to be a follow up from the Sharks Down Under meeting held in Sydney in 1991. As such we will feature four keynote speakers who presented at Sharks Down Under and will provide a perspective from that meeting to this one. Keynote speakers include: Chris Lowe, Barry Bruce, Geremy Cliff and John West.

We hope you will keep these dates and this meeting in mind as you plan your conference travel for 2010. Sharks Down Under was a very successful meeting and we hope to build upon that success to once again bring people to Australia to talk sharks (and rays, and chimaeras….).

We hope to see you down under next year.

G’Day!
