Student Workshop: Elasmobranch Conservation Research: Principles and Practice

Saturday, July 9, 12:00-1:30, Minneapolis Ballroom G

Speakers: Sonja Fordham, Neal Hammerschlag, Nick Dulvy, Tony Wiley

Abstract:

Elasmobranch conservation is a hot topic given the precipitous population declines reported for many species, yet there are several aspects of elasmobranch conservation research that generate debate. For example, the use of lethal sampling methods in scientific research is a volatile subject area in general– but can it ever be justified in a conservation context? Moreover, what exactly constitutes ‘conservation research’? We all like to think that our work will contribute in some way to the preservation of our study species, but where do we draw the line in terms of claiming tangible conservation-oriented outcomes? This workshop will cover issues such as those mentioned above, in addition to which, we will discuss perceptions of the non-scientific obligations of elasmobranch conservation researchers with regard to participating in public outreach and education programs. Leading elasmobranch researchers and conservation advocates will provide their personal views and insights on the complexities of elasmobranch conservation research, and lead discussions on the more contentious aspects of this important field of research.
