Donald R. Nelson Behavior Research Award
The Donald R. Nelson endowment was established in 1997 in association with the American Elasmobranch Society to honor the many research advances in shark and ray behavior made by the late Donald R. Nelson and his students. The purpose of the endowment is to support student research on the behavior and sensory biology of sharks and rays that is of the highest scientific merit. The award will be made to an AES student member at the upcoming AES/ASIH meetings. Click here to view past award winners.
Terms of the Award: Applicants for the award must be active student members in good standing with the American Elasmobranch Society as of 1 January, be in at least their second year of AES membership, be currently enrolled in an academic institution and have an academic advisor familiar with their research.
The award funds may be used:
- for the purchase of research supplies
- to subsidize not more than $500 in travel expenses to a research site
Funds may not be used for personal expenses, purchase of capital equipment, per diem expenses or travel to scientific meetings. Within one year after receiving the award, the recipient will submit a summary report of their research progress and a full expense accounting to the Nelson Award Committee. It is expected that the results of each funded study will be presented at the annual AES meetings and also published in a major scientific journal.
